Take-Aways: Removable Inserts from Esopus

Esopus Space, New York, NY, September 15–October 18, 2011

Every issue of Esopus featured at least one removable item. These included posters, foldouts, limited-edition artworks, and facsimiles of items like business cards, handwritten letters, or even, in one issue, a license plate. These “take-aways” were essential to the mission of Esopus in a number of ways. They were a way to provide our readers with actual artworks by well-known contemporary figures, including Marilyn Minter and Jenny Holzer, for only the cost of an issue. They brought an immediacy to archival materials, like those included in series such as Modern Artifacts, presented with the Museum of Modern Art, or Public Access, with the New York Public Library, that were otherwise difficult, if not impossible, for the general public to interact with. This exhibition, taking up nearly every corner of the gallery space, featured all of the inserts included in the first 16 issues of Esopus.
