Designer Sol Sender once declared that “the strongest logos tell simple stories.” My goal with the logos I created for Esopus, publicsfear, and my new publishing imprint Mirrorical was to do exactly that. And while my desire as designer of Esopus was always to be as invisible as possible in order to let the content exist on its own terms (and reach readers on theirs), I admit that I indulged myself on the logos I created for every “In Retrospect” column created by author Angus Trumble (1964–2022). For this series, Angus offered an encylopedic—and typically wry—take on one paticular year in history, which gave me the opportunity to source fonts and other design elements from each period on which he had focused.
