This cover of the iconic Tom Petty song was the lead single from Closer Than They Appear, an LP of cover songs I released in the autumn of 2022. When I started thinking about doing a video, I was inspired by an idea from my friend Alex Marvar to change the song’s subject from an ex-lover to Donald Trump. Because the song came out in the month or so leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, taking that approach in a music video felt both timely and important. The video, which includes footage of Trump leaving the White House on his last day in office, also features my first (and pretty much last) foray into using a green screen, which is how “I” ended up in the White House.
