Graphite on paper, 2018. 14 by 11 inches.
Scott Johnson, the husband of the Esopus Foundation’s administrator, Keriann Kohler, was our unofficial “house photographer” when the Foundation was operating out of its exhibition and performance venue, Esopus Space, in Greenwich Village from 2009 to 2012. I’ve always loved this photo he took during the Esopus 16 launch party in the spring of 2011. Featured prominently in the background is Clément Gagliano, who secured a visa to move to New York in 2011 to intern for Esopus for six months. Like so many of the 48 interns I’ve worked with over the years, he was an incredible help to both me and Keriann (partially obscured here to his left). This photo has always served as a reminder to me of how hard Keriann and all of the interns were always working in the background at every Esopus event.
