I’ve organized quite a few “subscriber invitationals” over the years for Esopus. These have ranged from asking readers to submit descriptions of their childhood imaginary friends (subsequently turned into songs by musicians including Kimya Dawson and Vetiver for Esopus 4 ) to inviting them to share their favorite thing in New York City (then drawn from life by artist Jason Polan in Esopus 11). In 2012, I asked the legendary screenwriter Hampton Fancher (Blade Runner) if he would consider creating film treatments from “pitches” solicited from our readers. To my delight, he said yes, and he ended up creating two treatments from a healthy number of subscriber submissions. This image is from a photograph I took of Hampton in his Brooklyn apartment deep into his writing (and editing) process for his treatment based on a submission by musician Cassandra Jenkins. The process—like all of Hampton’s writing— involved cutting sections of his manuscripts and rearranging them physically to arrive at a final product.
