One of my favorite things to do is to visit artists in their studios, and this was particularly true when they were working on their projects for an issue of Esopus. This drawing is based on a photograph I took at artist Mickalene Thomas’s Brooklyn studio in 2015. In it, Mickalene is flipping through a mock-up she created for Together, her mesmerizing project for Esopus 23 (Spring 2016) that incorporated die-cuts, embossing, specialty varnishes, and removable inserts.
