For its last two issues, Esopus established a partnership with the New York Public Library, which included both events programming and the content series “Public Access,” which presented works from various of NYPL’s archival materials. I snapped this photo while at an Esopus event in August 2017 at the library’s 42nd Street branch, featuring the acclaimed translator Ann Goldstein. Ann, who contributed a fascinating piece to Esopus 24, led a translation workshop in which she guided 25 lucky participants through her real-time translations of the Tower of Babel passage from six centuries’ worth of Italian Bibles from the library’s rare-book collections. Attendees were able to view these rarely seen volumes (carefully escorted in and out of the room on a cart like this one) before and after the presentation.
