Printed Matter, New York, NY, May 31–July 28, 2024
This exhibition at the legendary arts bookstore Printed Matter of materials from the archive of publicsfear, the art zine I cofounded and coedited with Pamela A. Ivinski in the early ’90s, featured production-related ephemera—including correspondence, mechanicals, mockups, to-do lists, and page layouts—as well as photographs of publicsfear events, original artworks, and collateral material I designed over the course of the publication’s three issues. Also presented were items related to a fourth issue of publicsfear that was never produced due to a lack of funding, including submissions by Doug Aitken, Sophie Calle, Glenn Ligon, Nan Goldin, Adrian Piper, and David Sedaris.
Archival titles and publicsfear issues were available for purchase at Printed Matter, alongside issues from and titles related to the output of Esopus.
I have had the privilege of working with Printed Matter, the legendary arts bookstore based in New York City, for over 30 years. It was the first bookstore I approached to sell publicsfear (see photo) and in the ensuing years it's distributed and promoted virtually every publication I’ve ever produced. I’ve also held events there for publicsfear, Esopus, and my latest imprint, Mirrorical. Make sure to visit the next time you're in New York’s West Chelsea neighborhood—but reserve plenty of time for the visit.
