Published by White Columns, 2008. Format: Xeroxed zine, 8.5 by 11 inches. 16 pages.

I edited and designed a special edition of White Columns's xerox publication The W.C. in conjunction with the first New York solo exhibition in more than 30 years of work by the Los Angeles-based artist Don Bachardy. The show, which I co-curated with White Columns director Matthew Higgs, included 30 recent drawings of male nudes, selected from the many hundreds Bachardy had been working on for several years. This xeroxed, stapled zine contains both an introduction by Bachardy and an interview with the artist by James White.

DON BACHARDY

I first met Don Bachardy in 1995, when I approached him about publishing his and Christopher Isherwood’s unpublished screenplay adapation of Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and Damned in Scenario. Don agreed, and I was able to interview him at the iconic house in Santa Monica canyon he shared with Isherwood during their decades-long relationship. Don and I have remained friends over the years—a trip to Los Angeles wouldn't be complete without a visit with him to The Golden Bull—and we have continued to collaborate together on exhibitions and projects for Esopus. if you haven't seen it, Chris and Don: A Love Story, the documentary bu Guido Santo and Tina Mascara about these two remarkable people and their groundbreaking partnership, is definitely worth watching.
